111 children (aged up to 5 years)
Non-notified / Approved
Our client sought resource consent to establish a new purpose-built childcare centre that would cater for 111 children and provide facilities for children aged up to five years of age.
From day one the built form was the key driver and focus for Fantails and the Architect – Mr Phil Smith, who worked to ensure that the building upon completion would be both distinctive and iconic, but of a scale and design that allowed the development to sit within the site, rather than one that dominated it. Rather than a building form and layout traditionally seen in childcare centre developments, it was decided to produce a form that would provide visual interest to the primary Millwater Parkway road frontage. This was achieved through the fan type design elements of the building which give the building a somewhat ‘fantail’ type appearance. The use of these forms assisted in breaking up, what would otherwise be a long bland frontage.
Overall, the design was recognised by Auckland Council through the resource consent process as an example of a carefully designed architectural building that fitted within its environment and provided a point of interest for the surrounding area.
Internally, the building itself is divided into four main areas. These main areas were designed to cater for the various needs of children based on their age in accordance with statutory Early Childhood Education requirements. The building in addition to the internal activity rooms also incorporates the following features: a staff room; toilet and laundry facilities; a management office; reception; a kitchen; and a sleeping room. Landscaping, car parking, and outdoor play areas form the balance of the site.
